Day 22: Lakiya and Kfar Hanokdim

The group began their morning at an area overlooking a wadi (Arabic word for valley), providing beautiful views of the desert! They then went to Lakiya, a Bedouin town just outside of Beer Sheva, where they met a young woman named Shirin who is the Rakezet Hadracha (Leadership coordinator) for one of Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed's machanot (summer camps). She spoke to the group about what it is like to be a Bedouin woman, the challenges she has faced with being both a Bedouin and a woman in society, and why she is part of the movement. She said that while she was a college student, people weren't the most respectful. However, when she joined the movement, she found people were very welcoming and accepting of who she was.

After a delicious hummus and labneh lunch,
MBI went to Kfar Hanokdim, near Arad in the Judean Desert, to hear from another member of the Bedouin community who spoke to them about Bedouin history and culture. Some facts about the woman who spoke to them was that she was focus of a film called "Against All Odds," and has raised 10 children on her own! While listening to her story, they drank some coffee and tea, before heading out for a camel ride.

After dinner, they met Habonim Dror United Kingdom's Tour (what we call MBI) participants for some get to know you activities and hanging out time under the starry desert sky! The MBI tzevet also performed a hatzaga (skit) to introduce them to Masada. They'll be waking up quite early to hike up Masada in order to beat the heat and watch the sunrise, so they went to bed on the earlier side tonight.
