Day 2: Beginning to Explore Jerusalem

What a busy first full day of MBI it was!

To start the day, the chanichimot participated in a mifkad (morning ceremony, also known as hitkansut boker at some of the machanot), where they gathered outside and sang the MBI song that they learned yesterday. They then ate breakfast together.

After breakfast, the chanichimot spent some time with their new MBI kvutza and played a couple more get to know you games. They then went on a walking siyur from Kiryat Moriah along the Tayelet Hess, a promenade, where they got to see a view of Jerusalem and the Old City. While there, the madrichimot talked about what they were seeing, and explained more in depth where they were in relation to the rest of Israel. For many, this was the first time they really learned about the Western Wall or the Dome of the Rock. Next up was a short peula (activity) with different photos and blurbs about Jerusalem's long and complex history, from Biblical times to modern day. Each chanichol was asked to pick a different photo that represented what they understood or knew about Jerusalem. A few of them shared what photos they chose and the connections they drew to it. Before leaving this spot, they all took a ton of photos of themselves, as you can see way below.

Afterwards, the MBI chanichimot boarded the bus to Machaneh Yehuda shuk, a large open air market in the middle of Jerusalem. On the way, two of the chanichimot from Galil, Andre and David, used the bus microphone to perform their own radio show for some silly en route entertainment! Once they got to the shuk, the chanichimot were given the opportunity to experience their first pizur lunch. They split into smaller groups, where each group was given some money to buy each person in the group their own lunch inside one of the several shuk food spots. As you might have guessed, many chanichimot choose to get falafel and shwarma! While doing so, they explored the many twists and turns of the market, and stopped by several shops selling dried fruit, candy, iced coffee, spices, Judaica, and more!

Once everyone had eaten lunch, it was time to go back on the bus and return to the hostel.
After settling back into the hostel, the chanichimot had another peula (activity) where they spoke about MBI as a machaneh. Each of HDNA's machanot may have slightly different traditions and customs, but most if not all of the chanichimot would agree that there are still lot of similarities between the machanot - perhaps one of the most salient being that each of these machanot holds a very special and magical place in their hearts.

The chanichimot thus spoke about how MBI can also be a place to foster special and magical experiences. They are afforded with a wonderful opportunity to meet peers from other HDNA machanot - others who may share similar values to them, have also been able to create friendships within the framework of kvutza, and experience being part of a Jewish community at machaneh as well. The chanichimot then spoke about the different cultures and traditions from their respective machanot that they want to bring onto MBI and share with everyone. While they are only just beginning to meet each other and experience what it like to be a part of a new kvutza, they are working hard to forge new relationships!

After dinner, the chanichimot formed various chanichimot-lead MBI va'adot (committees). These va'adot are:

  1. Ivrit Shimushit (Useful Hebrew): Helping teach Hebrew in a silly and fun way each day.
  2. Bus Culture: Picking playlists and devising fun bus games while traveling to different sites.
  3. Rosh of the Day: One or two people from each kvutza will sit with the MBI mazkirut and go over the schedule for the day. They'll be responsible for helping the mazkirut and madrichimot make sure everyone is on time for each activity and is accounted for, and that the bus is packed and ready to go.
  4. Social Media: Taking photos and videos, and helping to make sure that these MBI experiences are documented well for the memories (and for the blog!)

After a long, yet exciting first day, the chanichimot spent the rest of the evening hanging out before needing to get ready for bed. Tomorrow, they will go on their first tiyul (hiking trip) and get ready for the first Shabbat of MBI!
