Day 21: Mitzpe Ramon

This morning, the MBI chanichimot went to Machtesh Ramon (Ramon Crater), before heading to Mitzpe Ramon, a small town with beautiful views of the Negev. While Mitzpe is neither a Kibbutz nor a city, much of it does operate as a cooperative town. One of the cooperative ventures they learned about it is its co-op. They learned about its creation, changes it has gone through over the years, responses to price hikes and other economic issues in recent times, and how community members have worked together to operate it. They also had the chance to buy some things from the co-op with their kupa before they left.

In the afternoon, they had the opportunity to meet some students from Chavat HaNoar (The Youth Society), a boarding school in Mitzpe Ramon. A fun fact is that Rachel, one of the madrichot, studied there for 3 years. While speaking to some of these students, they got the chance to learn about the school, why students would chose to come there, as well as what some of them are studying. They also learned a bit about the concept and culture of boarding schools in Israel versus boarding schools in North America.

This evening, they had a night hike in Nachal Chaverim. At one point, they paused and put away their glow sticks to look at the desert night sky. They had a chance to learn about and identify some of the stars and constellations as well. They also sang some songs together, which was very beautiful. Today was also very special for MBI because they got to celebrate two birthdays, for Miki and for Joy! They ate cake, and then Miki and Joy both got some nice birthday blessings from their friends.

A model of Mitzpe Ramon and Machtesh Ramon!
Today was Miki and Joy's birthdays, so they had cakes with glow stick candles!
